8 Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Breakfast


I know that mornings are THE busiest time of the day. So, finding time to eat breakfast, let alone a healthy, nutritious, superfood-packed breakfast, is next to impossible. Today, I'm sharing with you 8 Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Breakfast!

Because breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Why you may ask? Oh, I'm so happy you did! Your body has been in a state of rest for 7+ hours. But while you've been resting your eyes, your body has been busy working away, healing and rejuvenating - taking care of all of the physical stresses from yesterday and preparing for a brand new day (which is why sleep is so important, too). Replenishing your body with a nutritious breakfast after a night of hard work is vital. Treat your body like the amazing machine that it is. Kick start every day with an awesome, power-packed breakfast. Here are 8 easy ways to help start your day with an upgraded ("better than before"/"better than the original") breakfast.


ONE | Add some color with fresh fruit and berries

Fresh fruit and berries not only create a beautiful bowl or plate, but they're also packed with so much nutrient-goodness. So, whatever you're choosing for breakfast - cereal, yogurt, oatmeal, smoothie, pancakes, toast, etc. - add some fresh fruit to the side or on top!

TWO | Amp up your protein with nuts and nut butters

Nuts are a great way to add an extra dose of protein to your breakfast, which will help keep you fuller longer. Add a spoonful of your favorite nut butter (peanut, almond, cashew...) to your oatmeal, smoothie, or yogurt. Spread nut butter on top of your toast, pancakes, or waffles. Add some nuts to your oatmeal, cereal and on top of your yogurt. Go nuts!!

THREE | Sprinkle in a tablespoon of flaxseed

Flaxseed has been around for centuries and is considered a "superfood". It's high in omega 3s and fiber and all around body-loving goodness. You can find flaxseed in whole seed form or ground into a pounder/flour-like substance (this is my fave). You can mix it in with your oatmeal or pancake mix. Add it to smoothies. Sprinkle it in with dry cereal - then add milk. You can also use it in baked goods. So, if you're making muffins for breakfast, toss in a tablespoon or two.

FOUR | Grab a side of fresh juice or a smoothie

Regardless of what you're choosing to eat, adding a fresh juice (think freshly-juiced fruits and veggies) or a smoothie can truly start your day off with a power-packed list of fruits and veggies. We love this one, which you can easily find at Target and many grocers.

FIVE | Add a teaspoon of chia seeds

Chia! I'm sure by now you've heard of these tiny omega 3 powerhouses. They're amazing! You can add them to your smoothie (my fave), use them in baked goods, add to oatmeal (another fave), sprinkle into your yogurt, and so much more!

SIX | Drink a large glass of water

Water. Water. Water. I know that for some of you, you just don't. like. water. Others just don't understand that need to drink SO MUCH. Well, my friends, you are made up of more than 60% water. That's right. Over 60% of your body is water. So, consuming enough water every day is vital in order for your body to run correctly. Start your day with a large glass of water. Drink it before breakfast! It's one of the best ways to kick-start your day.

SEVEN | Swap processed sugars for natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup

Need a little sweetness in your life? Skip the highly processed sugars and use honey or 100% pure maple syrup. You can add one or the other to any of the following to sweeten things up - pancake batter, smoothie, yogurt (especially plain yogurt),  oatmeal, on top of toast.

EIGHT | Add some greens

Until the recent smoothie craze, adding greens to your breakfast hasn't been of the norm. Breakfasts typically consist of sweet, flour-based products. So, try working some greens into your breakfast. Add them to your smoothie. Saute a side for your eggs or mix them right into the eggs and scramble. Drink a green juice that includes greens. Spinach and kale are two of the most popular, but there are plenty to choose from.
